Simplicity

May 13, 2008

My friend Ronnie, wrote a blog and I wanted to share with whoever reads this. Great Blog!!!

Simplicity is in. I don’t know if you watch many commercials on TV or listen to them on the radio, but simplicity is a big seller. From pregnancy tests to digital cameras, everything is designed to be easier to understand and more “user-friendly”. A big seller in today’s market (and pretty much every good idea) finds a way to make some small aspect of life go a little more smoothly. So now we have cars that park themselves and coffee pots that wake up before coffee drinkers. But Macintosh is the king of simplicity. Their television ads don’t brag about hard drives or software or even Ram or processors. They basically say one thing: “Macs make life more enjoyable.” Mac dominates the portable media market with simple, yet powerful pieces of pocket-sized technology. Why? Part of it could be that the iPod has one button. How much more simple can you get?! But, just having one button isn’t incredible; a doorbell has one button. The incredible thing is what that one button does. Hundreds of songs, hours of video, and a number of other forms of entertainment are available to the user through that one button. That takes simplicity to a whole other level.

What these companies have hit on is that humans often feel chaotic, especially in our society. There is so much that needs to be done and so little time. We feel stretched in a million different directions. What we need is a little streamlining. We need a little simplicity. In his devotional book My Utmost for His Highest, Oswald Chambers says, “The lasting characteristic of a spiritual man is the ability to understand correctly the meaning of the Lord Jesus Christ in his life, and the ability to explain the purposes of God to others. The overruling passion of his life is Jesus Christ. Whenever you see this quality in a person, you get the feeling that he is truly a man after God’s own heart (see Acts 13:22).”

That gives a simplicity to life that I simply find refreshing. All the rest of the stuff I do in my life should come out of a passion to know Jesus Christ and make Him known. Then, I don’t have competing priorities like work, family, church, friends, service, etc. Instead, I have one all-consuming passion to know and honor Jesus Christ. But, the powerful aspect of that one focus in life is as I correctly understand more what having Jesus Christ as Lord means in the way I live, that changes the way I work, teach my family, participate in church, relate to friends, and seek opportunities to serve. It’s not always easy, but it certainly does simplify the chaos of an all too frantic life. My prayer is for singularity of passion so that Christ may work powerfully through my life as I understand Him more.
